Tyre volume is the best starting point. A stock-size SUV tyre requires far less air than a 35- or 37-inch off-road tyre, so larger tyres benefit from greater sustained airflow and a strong duty cycle. Sherpa's compressor range includes compact on-board and portable units through to the BIG V4, which is designed for very high-volume tyre inflation. Also consider how many tyres you normally inflate, the pressure change between trail and road use, storage space and battery current demand. Headline L/min is useful, but airflow at pressure and thermal performance are more important in real use. A compressor that is extremely fast at zero pressure may slow considerably as a tyre approaches road pressure.

Yes. Cold temperatures can reduce battery output, stiffen hoses and seals and increase the viscosity of lubricants in equipment that uses them. Sherpa's oil-free compressors avoid one common cold-oil issue, but the electrical system still matters. A battery that performs well at 20°C can show much greater voltage sag at -20°C, particularly if it is ageing. Keep high-current connectors clean and use the supplied or specified cable size. If a compressor sounds slow in winter, measure voltage at the compressor while it is running rather than assuming the motor is faulty. Flexible hose should also be inspected for cracking if it has been repeatedly handled at very low temperatures.

Litres per minute is an airflow figure, but the pressure at which it is measured matters. Free-air flow is measured under little back-pressure and will be higher than the airflow available while inflating a tyre that is already at 200–275 kPa. Motor power, cylinder design, cooling, hose diameter and fittings all affect sustained output as pressure rises. For large 4x4 tyres, compare real inflation time and duty cycle as well as the headline L/min rating. A restrictive inflator or small quick-connect fitting can also become the bottleneck on a high-flow compressor, so the hose and accessories need to match the compressor's capacity.

No. A compressor can inflate tyres directly without a receiver. A tank is useful when you want a small reserve of compressed air, automatic pressure-switch operation, an air horn or short pneumatic demands. It can make an on-board system feel more responsive, but it does not increase the compressor's true sustained airflow. Once the stored air is used, performance returns to what the compressor can continuously produce. Any receiver should be rated for the working pressure, securely mounted and drained regularly because condensation can collect inside. In Canadian winter conditions, accumulated moisture can freeze in valves or lines, so regular draining becomes especially important.

Check electrical supply and heat first. High-output 12V compressors draw significant current, and a weak battery, undersized extension cable, poor battery clips or dirty high-current connectors can cause voltage drop. Thermal protection may also stop the motor if the duty cycle is exceeded or cooling airflow is blocked. In winter, cold batteries can make voltage drop worse. On the air side, look for kinked hose, frozen moisture in a fitting, or a restrictive inflator. Do not solve repeated fuse failures by fitting a larger fuse. Measure voltage at the compressor while it is operating and inspect the connections for heat or discolouration before assuming the compressor itself has failed.
