Tow Truck Winches

A tow-truck or rollback winch is designed for frequent vehicle loading and usually has longer rope and a heavier-duty mounting arrangement than a recreational 4x4 winch. Commercial work also places more emphasis on repeatable braking, control reliability and rope spooling. Sherpa's 20,000 lb tow-truck winch is intended for loading vehicles and heavy equipment, so the truck frame, deck, fairlead and electrical system all need to support that duty. Canadian operators should also plan for winter contamination: salt, slush and ice can affect rope condition, remote sockets and electrical terminals if they are not inspected regularly.

Cold batteries provide less available current, synthetic rope can freeze stiff if packed wet, and road salt accelerates corrosion at terminals and control plugs. Ice can also build around the fairlead or drum and interfere with smooth spooling. Before a winter shift, inspect the rope path, test the free-spool and remote controls and confirm the winch pulls strongly under light load. Keep connectors clean and protected from brine. If rope has frozen into the drum, do not force the winch against the ice; thaw and clean it first. Commercial reliability improves dramatically when these checks are part of the daily walk-around.

Synthetic rope is lighter and easier to handle around disabled vehicles and has much less mass if the line fails. Steel cable tolerates rough abrasion and heat well and remains common in commercial towing. Canadian winter conditions create trade-offs: synthetic rope can absorb water and freeze, while steel cable can corrode rapidly from salt and brine. Whichever line is chosen, inspect the full length regularly. Replace synthetic rope for cuts, melted fibres or severe abrasion; replace steel cable for broken wires, crushing, kinks or corrosion. The fairlead must also match the line type.

Uneven spooling usually means the rope is approaching the drum at too much of an angle. Loading a vehicle off-centre can force the line against one flange and bury lower layers. Reposition the truck or use a correctly rated redirection pulley so the rope approaches the fairlead more squarely. Periodically unwind and respool under moderate tension so loose or crossed layers are corrected. In winter, also remove ice and packed snow around the fairlead. Continued side-loading can damage the rope, drum flange and mounting structure.

Inspect rope or cable, hook or closed link, fairlead, drum, brake, gearbox, motor terminals, control box and mounting bolts on a documented schedule. Commercial use means small faults repeat often, so look for heat discolouration at high-current joints and changes in gearbox noise or brake holding. Clean winter salt from exposed electrical and mechanical parts and inspect plugs for corrosion. Test both wired and wireless controls before a shift. Rope should be respoolled evenly and replaced before damage becomes severe. Keeping a service record helps identify recurring problems before they create roadside downtime.
